CO attorney general reviews tuition break for illegal immigrants

Attorney General John Suthers said today he is reviewing the legality of Metro State College’s recent decision to cut tuition costs for illegal immigrants, who now must pay out-of-state rates in Colorado.

Suthers, a Republican, said he couldn’t reveal specifically where the request for the legal review came from, but said it was prompted by at least one other higher education institution.

“With Metro State embarking on this policy after the ASSET bill had been defeated by the legislature,” Suthers said, “other colleges are asking us, ‘Gee, what about this?’ “

The ASSET bill, or Senate Bill 15, died at the hands of a Republican-controlled committee in the state House earlier this year. It was the sixth time a bill to lower tuition costs for illegal immigrants failed.

The bill would have created a special class of tuition for illegal immigrants — higher than in-state but still lower than out-of-state.
