UPDATE: Suspect detained in N. Murray shooting

A man was shot in the leg near the Hill Park Apartments on North Murray Boulevard near East Bijou Street just after 8:30 p.m., Colorado Springs police said.

Within an hour police had detained one of a possible two suspects for questioning, said Sgt. Joel Kern. Kern said police has tentatively identified both the suspects, and were confident that they’d be able to track them down.

Kern said a gunfight started in the parking lot of the apartment complex, and the injured man ran into the building and up to the third floor, where a commotion ensued.

The man had been loaded into the back of a pickup truck when police arrived moments later. He had gun shot wounds to the leg, and was expected to survive, police said.

Robyn Washburn said she was walking her dogs in the area when she heard a volley of rapid loud bangs, a pause and then more bangs. She said she could smell gun powder in the air.

As she cut through a parking lot she said she saw several men lifting the wounded man into a blue truck. Another group of four men jumped into a black car and drove off while another man sprinted through the parking lot, she said.

Another witness, Gary Barben, also saw the lone man sprinting away from the scene of the shooting.

“It was like he was on fire,” said Barben, who also lives in a nearby apartment.

Neighbors stood in the parking lot and swapped stories while police rounded up their investigation. Washburn, Barben and their neighbors were sure that several of the first rounds fired came from a shot gun. The answering patter of bullets sounded like they came from a pistol, neighbors said.
