Clark leads commissioners in campaign contributions
If elections are decided by money, Sallie Clark has a big advantage over her GOP primary opponent, Karen Magistrelli.
Clark has raised far more than any county commissioner candidate in El Paso and Teller counties, and more than three times as much as Magistrelli. Clark even has more money remaining in her election account than any other commissioner has in contributions.
“I think it obviously gives me an advantage,” said Clark, seeking a third four-year term as El Paso County District 3 Commissioner. “It costs money to communicate with folks about your position and the things you’re trying to do.”
The Campaign finance reports report contributions and epenitures through May 31. Commissioner candidates must file again by June 22.
Primary elections are June 26.
Clark reported $28,479 in contributions and $13,969.37 in expenditures. She began with $2,296.64 and has $16,806.27 remaining.
Magistrelli has raised $8,899.87 and has $3,365.25 remaining. The Mark J. Bogosian Living Trust has contributed $5,000 in three installments to Magistrelli’s campaign.
Clark, who has also campaigned for mayor and city council posts, said she has experienced and well-organized supporters to go with a loyal group of financial contributors.
Magistrelli, a political newcomer, said she can overcome Clark’s well-oiled politcal machine and the seeming financial advantage.
“I don’t think it’s any disadvantage at all,” Magistrelli said. “That’s because of all the volunteers we have that are so committed. Their hundreds of hours of volunteer work will make the difference. The miracle is eight months ago I had no political friends. I’m astounded how people have gotten involved.”
Clark’s money comes from wide-ranging contributors but includes a long list of community heavyweights.
“They go from grass roots folks up to high-level community leaders,” Clark said. “I think that shows how broad-based my support is. I’ve built those relationships over the years.”
Clark said she hasn’t aggressively pursued contributions.
“It’s been soft fundraising,” Clark said. “I will raise more once we get past the primary.”
In District 2, commissioner Amy Lathen has raised $15,655. She is unopposed in the Republican primary.
In District 4, commissioner Dennis Hisey has raised $13,054 and his opponent Auddie Cox has $6,330 in contributions.
In the race for Teller County District 1 Commissioner, Marc Dettenrieder is funding his own campaign while Brian Walker has raised $2,800.
