McBride nearing return from wrist injury, Sky Sox rained out

D.J. LeMahieu sat in a folding chair Tuesday at his locker, talking to Sky Sox teammate Matt McBride. On Wednesday, he was in Miami, now with the Rockies for the first time.

“Go get ‘em!” McBride told LeMahieu before LeMahieu departed Colorado Springs.

LeMahieu didn’t miss anything in the Springs, and McBride couldn’t have played due to an injury, as the Sky Sox and the Oklahoma City RedHawks were postponed after an 81-minute rain delay at Security Service Field. The showers never stopped, so the game was called at 7:26 p.m. A doubleheader is set for 4:05 p.m. Thursday – a pair of seven-inning affairs – with Drew Pomeranz and Guillermo Moscoso expected to start for the Sky Sox.

MAY 23 SKY SOX REPORT: RAIN FORCES SKY SOX TWINBILL

The Rockies recalled LeMahieu, dealt in the trade that sent Tyler Colvin from the Cubs in exchange for Ian Stewart and Casey Weathers in December, as a replacement for reserve infielder Jonathan Herrera, on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. To replace LeMahieu, the Sky Sox (23-22) again got infielder Jimmy Cesario from Double-A Tulsa – Cesario has batted .200 in 12 games with the Sky Sox, striking out six times.

Making the jump isn’t a shocker for LeMahieu, a 23-year-old second baseman who made his major-league debut last season with the Cubs less than two years after he was drafted, having batted .319 with 50 RBIs and 22 doubles in 2011 in splitting time with Cubs farm teams in Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. He posted a .315 average with 26 RBIs and eight doubles in a team-high 43 games with the Sky Sox, and he also stole 11 bases.

“He comes to the field every day, gets his work in, goes out there, plays hard,” McBride said, mentioning the consistency LeMahieu displayed in an 11-game hitting streak and a 22-game on-base streak that ended Tuesday in a 9-5 loss against Oklahoma City, the third straight defeat by the Sky Sox. The chance of the Rockies calling is always “a little bit in the back of your mind,” McBride said. “But you don’t want to think about it too much.”

Part of the trade last year that sent Ubaldo Jimenez to the Indians and brought Pomeranz and Alex White to the Rockies, McBride, 26, has been sidelined the past four games with an injured left wrist that he suffered Friday against New Orleans while sliding into third. He jammed his wrist on the base, then tightness and swelling followed, and even though nothing was broken, he has been in and out of the training room in receiving treatment.

Sky Sox manager Stu Cole won’t put McBride on the disabled list, and if McBride takes batting practice Thursday without pain, he may play on an eight-game road trip that starts Friday at Fresno. “It’s nothing serious,” McBride said. “I’ve just got to let (the swelling) go down and be ready to go in a few days. … My goal is to be back as soon as I can.”

McBride is hitting .356 with 24 RBIs, his 57 hits match LeMahieu for the team lead and he paces the Sky Sox with 86 total bases, 22 runs, four home runs and 13 doubles. He’s at .407 in the cleanup position, a year after hitting .277 with Tulsa and Indians affiliates in Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Akron, and he has one error in primarily playing right field. With a five-game hitting streak he’s riding, the injury is “definitely frustrating,” he said. “Things happen, and you’ve got to sort of get through them and get back out there.”
