Locavores’ Table
What: Buttercup’s Frozen Yogurt
www.buttercupsfroyo.com
Taster says: Start with the “Tart.” This lady will give your taste buds a run for their money. She’s lightly sweetened yet tangy, which is exceptionally titillating, considering that she isn’t dressed for success. From there, top her, swirl her or otherwise dress her up with any number of cute accessories such as nuts, candy toppings and more.
Twelve other flavors of frozen goodness (one stevia-sweetened, aka no sugar), a fruit sorbetto and two flavors of Boulder Ice Cream round out the cool offerings.
The toppings are too numerous to name.
The best part: These yogurts are made with real ingredients, no artificial colors or flavors.
Available at: Buttercup’s Frozen Yogurt, 27 S. Tejon St., Suite 110
Cost: Retail cost is $0.42 per ounce. The cups are fairly large, so a typical serving with room for toppings usually comes in around $3-$4.
How local is it? The owners are Monument natives, and the milk hails from Colorado. After that, as many ingredients as possible are sourced locally, although there’s a definite tropical vibe.
Know your food: Owners Lexie Spiranac and Joshua Mitchell graduated from Colorado College. While attending grad school in California, Spiranac, surrounded by frozen yogurt shops, thought, “Colorado Springs needs this!” Thus, a dream was born.
Hang with friends, schedule a meeting, or go by yourself and try all the flavors. The shop has spaces that will accommodate groups or intimate meetings.
Yogi Bliss and Boulder Ice Cream, both out of Boulder, provide bases made from Colorado milk. Colorado Coffee Merchants and Two Leaves and a Bud teas round out the Colorado offerings.
