Thursday’s roundup: Coronado rallies past Widefield
Here are scores from around the Pikes Peak area on Thursday
Sand Creek’s soccer forward Danny Childs has signed to play with the NCAA Division I University of Vermont in the fall. Childs scored 20 goals this past season on 80 shots and totaled four assists. The senior also was the kicker for the Scorpions’ football team. He knocked through a 54- and 57-yard field goal on his way to becoming one of the top kickers in the state.
BASEBALL
Coronado 6, Widefield 5
At Coronado: Coronado (5-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Widefield.The Gladiators (3-2) led 5-3 going into the frame.
Andrew Trujillo and Drew MacMillan each had two hits for a combined three RBIs for the Cougars. Carter Gerber (3.50 ERA) pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on two hits to earn the win.
Coronado’s MacMillan (2.80 ERA) started the game and gave up four runs in five innings. He also walked four and struck out nine.
Widefield’s Mario Sanabria threw six innings and gave up six runs on 98 pitches. He had four walks and four strikeouts in the loss.
Five players drove in an RBI for the Gladiators.
Palmer 11, Mitchell 1
At Palmer: Mitchell (0-7) recorded just one hit and remains winless.
Palmer (4-0) is undefeated.
Tanner Metzler and Joseph Rosales combined for the one-hitter for the Terrors. Offensively, Palmer scored in all five innings led by Jonathon Vieira’s three RBIs. Rashad Cordova and Johnny Holland each added two hits and two RBIs as well for the Terrors.
Mitchell will host Wasson (0-3), which is without a win as well, Friday.
Mesa Ridge 13, Vista Ridge 0
At Mesa Ridge: Mesa Ridge scored 13 runs in the first two innings — six in the first and seven in the second. Kaden Pope led the way with four RBIs on two hits. Drew Mathis and Logan Beatty also added two RBIs apiece for the Grizzlies.
Kyle Sandy threw a one-hitter for Mesa Ridge (3-2) with four walks and five strikeouts. Vista Ridge (0-5) has been shut out four times this season. The Wolves have been outscored 54-to-2.
Ponderosa 19, Fountain-Fort Carson 1
At Ponderosa: Nineteen runs ago, Fountain-Fort Carson led 1-0 after the top of the first inning.
Ponderosa scored eight in the first, three in the second, two in the third and six in the fourth.
The Trojans (2-3) had three hits and as many errors.
Ellicott 15, Evangelical Christian Academy 3
At ECA: Ellicott scored 13 runs in the first three innings. ECA (0-3) has given up 68 runs in three games.
GIRLS SOCCER
Evangelical Christian Academy 8, Wasson 1
At Wasson: ECA (4-1) scored five goals in the first 12 minutes; Heidi Mann scored a hat trick in the first half; Sarah Kohl had four assists and the Eagles led 7-0 after 40 minutes.
Wasson (1-4) was outshot 27-to-2 and its lone goal came when Kassandra Etrata scored an unassisted goal in the 65th minute.
Eagles’ coach Kevin Goos played mostly reserves in the second half.
Palmer Ridge 2, Rampart 0
At Rampart: Rampart (2-2-1) hasn’t scored a goal in its past three games. Palmer Ridge (4-0) has scored six.
Thursday, the Rams were outshot 12-to-5 by the Bears.
Mackenzie Gouner scored first at the 15 minute mark in the opening half. Haley Fisher scored 50 minutes later on an assist from Meagan Watson.
Palmer Ridge’s Brooke Buzzell made saves on all five shots she faced. As for Rampart, it may be facing a bit of a setback with the absence of Adrienne Jordan, a signee to play for UNC, who chose track over soccer this spring.
Pine Creek 8, Greeley Central 0
At Pine Creek: After winning its first three games, Pine Creek (4-1-1) had scored no goals and lost, and tied one before Thursday.
Against Greeley Central, the Eagles’ eight goals gave them 18 on the season. Annie Woodridge scored the first two goals, Stephanie DeMosch scored the next two and Shianne Smelker scored the following two.
Mackenzie Korbus netted the final goal of the game in the 58th minute.
Pine Creek outshot the northern Colorado team 28-to-1. Goalie Katie Karr has given up three goals in six games for the Eagles.
Doherty 6, Woodland Park 2
At Doherty: Doherty’s Madison Furbush scored a hat trick and added an assist. Megan O’Driscoll, Jordin Schaller and Mary Anderson also scored for the Spartans (3-3).
Woodland Park (1-4) had previously broken a three-game skid with its 5-0 over Harrison on Tuesday.
James Irwin 1, Colorado Springs Christian 1
At CSCS: Two goals in the first and zero in the second left Thursday’s game tied at 1. CSCS’s Hannah Mauro made 13 saves and James Irwin’s (1-2-2) Olivia Farrington made five.
Kara Goldberg scored on Emily Keller’s assist for the Lions (0-2-2).
Pueblo County 3, Canon City 1
At Canon City: Canon City’s Nicole Decker scored the Tigers’ only goal. Goalie Emily Holt made five saves on eight shots.
The game was scoreless at half, before Pueblo County score three in the second.
Canon City (3-3) has lost three in a row since winning its first three games.
GIRLS TENNIS
Rampart 7, Fountain-Fort Carson 0
At Rampart: No match went to three sets as Rampart quickly swept Fountain-Fort Carson Thursday.
No. 1 singles player Hannah Young endured the closest game of the day when she defeated Bonnie Bradt 6-3, 6-4. The other singles players for the Rams lost a combined one game.
Bradt is the only player who has won a match this season for the Trojans.
Mitchell 3, Colorado Springs Christian 2
At Mitchell: Mitchell (1-1) swept both doubles matches and No. 3 singles Lauren Machado defeated CSCS’s (0-1) Alleugh Molchhan 6-3, 6-4.
The Lions’ Tori VanDeVeer (No.1) won 6-0, 6-0 over Nyasia Hutson and Kayla Troaster (No. 2) came back to defeat Mitchell’s Kayla Hess 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Coronado 7, Palmer 0
At Palmer: Coronado’s singles team lost a combined four games Thursday. No. 1 singles player Olivia Babeu won 6-0, 6-1; Chanelle Bole (No. 2) won 6-0, 6-0; and Allie Beaudin (No. 3) won 6-0, 6-3.
Palmer did even worse in doubles play as it was swept and only won a total of three games.
Widefield 4, Pueblo East 3
At Widefield: Widefield lost all of the singles matches only to win every doubles match. Taylor Anderson was the most competitive in singles play for the Gladiators as she lost in a tiebreaker 6-1, 7-6, (7-5).
BOYS SWIMMING
Lewis-Palmer 98, Coronado 88
At Coronado: Lewis-Palmer sophomore Hunter Bains won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. Then, he anchored the 400 freestyle relay to a win in 3:24.32. Teammate Connor Cox won the 100 butterfly, the 100 backstroke and the senior was the third leg in the 400 freestyle relay.
Bains won the 100 by just under 1 second and the 200 in over just 1 second. While Cox won the butterfly in just over 1 second and the backstroke in just under 1 second.
Coronado’s Danny Kay won the 50 freestyle in 22.29 and anchored the 200 freestyle relay to a time of 1:32.24.
The Rangers won nine events and the Cougars won three.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Chaparral 21, Palmer Ridge 13
At Palmer Ridge: Palmer Ridge (4-2) gave up 20-plus points for the first time this season. Thurday’s loss was the Bears’ first at home.
