BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Colorado Springs Christian School 73, Manual 71
At CSU: Not the finals win they were looking for, but CSCS won the 3A consolation finals behind Nate Engesser’s 43 points.
Engesser became the 10th player to score over 1,900 career points. His 1,902 makes him the eight all-time leading scorer in Colorado hoops history.
The senior went 14-for-19 from the field, hit two 3’s and hit 13 of 14 free throws.
Kyle Broekhuis added 12 in his last game for the Lions.
There were five lead changes, seven ties and Manual had the game’s largest lead at 12.
CSCS (26-1) shot 56 percent and hit 22 of 25 free throws. Manual shot 72 percent but hit only 11 of 22 free throws.
CSCS had nine turnovers compared to Manual’s 19.
The Lions finish fifth in 3A.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Air Academy 22, Palmer 2
At Palmer: A day after winning the 4A state basketball title Erin Todd and Miranda Beal led the way for Air Academy with four goals apiece.
Both players were top five in the state in scoring last season when the Kadets lost to Cherry Creek in the finals.
Each had six shots on net.
“They are vital,” coach Sean Harmon said. “We started off a little slow but actually Kaley Homes won (four) draw controls and then we started scoring in the latter part of the half.”
They scored 13 in the first.
Air Academy has won six straight league title and won state in 2009.
Todd and Beal will be looking for their second stated title of the year come May.
Six other Kadets (1-0) players had at least two goals in the rout.
Palmer (0-1) had nine saves on 31 shots. Air Academy’s Kenzie Baer made four saves on six shots.
Palmer Ridge 15, Cherokee Trail
At Palmer Ridge: A year after being named Pikes Peak girls’ lacrosse coach of the year, Nancy Fritzsche’s team is back to its winning ways.
Palmer Ridge’s (1-0) Julia Gramlich scored five goals and added two assists. Shannon Bryant added three goals and three assists for the Bears.
Briana Knop made six saves on 14 shots.
Palmer Ridge led 13-3 at half.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Evangelical Christian Academy 64, Paonia 51
At Pueblo: ECA finishes third in 2A.
The Eagles (24-3) fell to Akron Friday in the 2A semifinals 47-40.
Akron won the 2A chmpionship later in the day as it beat Lutheran 57-49.
Akron 57, Lutheran 49
PUEBLO, Colo. (AP): Sidney Merrill scored 24 points and dominated underneath in the final minutes, helping Akron to a 57-49 victory over Lutheran Parker for the 2A girls state championship Saturday night.
“We look to feed it down low. We work on it all the time,” coach Brian Christensen said as the Rams (25-1) claimed their first girls basketball title. They lost in the 2010 championship.
Merrill, a 6-foot junior, hit 7 of 8 free throws and swished three field goals in the fourth quarter. Her three-point play with 1:16 remaining gave Akron a 53-49 edge.
“If they put the game in my hands, I know with my teammates’ help, I can deliver,” Merrill said. “We work on post moves so much.”
Taylor Sturms scored 14 points to lead Lutheran (19-6).
Evangelical Christian won the third-place game, beating Paonia 64-51, and Rye defeated Del Norte 43-34 for the consolation championship.
BASEBALL
Sand Creek 14, Mitchell 0
At Mitchell: Sand Creek’s Chase Bowers pitched a complete game two hitter. He had two stikeouts and two walks.
He also scored two runs.
Josh Keaton went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs for the Scorpions.
It was a dominant performance from a team (1-1) that had lost its first game to Palmer 3-2.
Mitchell’s Caleb Ponczoch pitched 2.2 innings and gave up 11 runs. The Marauders had six errors on the day.
It was opening day for Mitchell (0-1).
Canon City 13, Coronado 3
At Canon City: Canon City (2-0) has outscored its opponent 33-5.
The Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning.
Coronado’s Andrew Trujillo was credited with the loss.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Doherty 1, Chatfield 0
At Doherty: Taylor Denny saved all five shots and recorded her first shutout of the season (1-1).
Doherty’s Kendra Penchoff score the game’s lone-goal. Ashley Furbush assisted on the goal.
Fountain-Fort Carson 1, Mesa Ridge 0
At Mesa Ridge:Alicia Wilson scored the games lone goal.
Fountain-Fort Carson’s (3-0) Brittney McClain had six shots and Julia Roberts ended with an assist.
Mesa Ridge (1-1) won its first game by forfeit.
Mitchell 3, Wasson 2
At Mesa Ridge: After11 penalty kicks Mitchell found net in the 12th.
Andrea Rodriguez and Miky Towry each had a goal.
After a forfeit against Mesa Ridge, Wasson (0-2) dropped its second game of the season.
Mitchell 6, Sierra 0
At Mesa Ridge: Mitchell’s (2-1) Rachel Francis and Kaitlin Petty had thre goals apiece.
Francis also recorded an assist.
Sierra has lost by a combined 16-0 in its first two games.
Canon City 10, Pueblo Central 0
At Dutch Clark Stadium: Canon City’s (2-0) Montana Buckhaults scored three goals in its first road game of the season.
Danielle Hanenberg and Atlanta Madone each scored two apiece for the Tigers.
Emily Holt made both saves in 65 minutes of work.
Canon City’s Nicole Decker and Amy Solis had two assists apiece.
Peak to Peak 2, The Classical Academy 0
At TCA: Pike to Peak’s Lea Maxwell scored both of the game’s goals. Teammates Galen Roda and Kaja Lamvik assisted her on the goals.
The Pumas (2-0) have won by a combined score of 12-0 in their first two games.
TCA (0-1) beat Peak to Peak last year in the 3A title.
James Irwin 2, Aruppe Jesuit 0
At Aruppe Jesuit: James Irwin’s Skylah Haught and Elle Mateo Swanson each scored a goal.
Keeper Olivia Farrington made five saves for the Jaguars (1-0-1).
Holy Family 1, Manitou Springs 0
At Holy Family:Holy Family’s Daryl Mitzel scored the game’s lone goal.
Manitou Springs (0-1) had four shots on goal.
Cheyenne Mountain 4, Battle Mountain 0
At Battle Mountain: Cheyenne Mountain (1-0) scored four goals on 11 shots.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Alexander Dawson 5, St. Mary’s 3
At Alexander Dawson: St. Mary’s (1-1) players Sean Scally, Kevin McGuniel and Cameron Hickert all socred.
It wasn’t enough.
After a 2-0 first period lead, Alexander Dawson scored three in second and one in both the third and fourth.
Scally had a team-high 11 shots on goal.
Tyler Anderson made 13 saves for the Pirates.
TRACK AND FIELD
Fountain-Fort Carson boys win D11 relays with 110 points
At Garry Berry Stadium: Coronado came in second with 86, Pine Creek followed with 77, then Doherty with 75 and Vista Ridge finished fifth with 62.
Fountain-Fort Carson’s relays won the 800, the distance medley, the shuttle hurdle and the second heat of the 400.
The Trojans also took the high jump.
Pine Creek girls win D11 relays with 87.2 points
At Garry Berry Stadium:Coronado took second with 85 points, followed by Fountain-Fort Carson with 84, then Woodland Park at 82 and in fifth place was Doherty with 49.
Pine Creek won the 800 relay and the triple jump. Coronado won the long and high jump, the distance medley and the 3200 relay.
Liberty girls win the Liberty Lancer Invitational with 151 points
At Liberty: Pine Creek finished second with 115 points, followed by Palmer with 86, then Lewis-Palmer with 80 and Harrison finished fifth.
Liberty senior Lauren Theune won the 800 by nearly 3 seconds with a 2:34.89. Sophomore Gina Hauptman took first in the mile with a 5:36 for the Lancers. Liberty’s Hannah Dimmick took the two mile in 12:18.12.
Lewis-Palmer’s Amanda Belzer won the pole vault and teammate Loryn Kassie won the high jump.
Harrison’s Charron Johnson won the 100 in 12.51.
And Falcon’s Deja Matlock won the 200 in 27.72.
Palmer boys win Liberty Lancers Invitational with 110 points
At Liberty: Pine Creek took second with 94 points, followed by Discovery Canyon with 90, then Widefield at 85 and Liberty finished fifth in its own invite.
Palmer’s Ben Goodman won the 400 in 50.60. Goodman was also a part of the 800 relay with his brother Andrew, that took first in 8:52.30.
The relay beat second-place Falcon by nearly 14 seconds.
Lewis-Palmer’s Alex Inzer won the 200 in 23.61 and Pine Creek’s Aaron Paden won the 110 hurdles in 15.24.
