BIGG NEWS: Mr. Biggs Family Fun Center to close in April
More than a million kids have blasted lasers, putt golf balls, raced go karts, taken home free bikes and blown out birthday candles at Mr. Bigg’s Famly Fun Center since it opened in a former chip factory seven years ago.
But all that running, screaming fun will end April 29, when the 10,000-foot center at 5825 Mark Dabling Blvd.closes its doors. Jim Fenlason, the current Mr. Biggs CEO, announced the closing on Friday morning, saying the bowling alley, go-karts and the rest would be pulled out to make room for the expansion of Stellar Restaurant Solutions, a restaurant call-center business founded by Mr. Biggs creator Steve Bigari.
“It’s been a great run for us, and we’re proud of all we’ve done here for our friends and neighbors with Mr. Biggs,” Fenlason said in a press release. “But the truth is that Mr. Biggs just doesn’t work as Mr. Smalls … and that’s what it would be after the Stellar expansion.”
Bigari, a former McDonald’s franchise owner, founded Mr. Bigg’s in March, 2005, and although it has gone through many changes — dropping paintball for bowling, adding a ropes course – it’s mission to generate big fun for kids from 3 to 92 hasn’t changed.
Some of that fun also took the form of charity work, with the Best Christmas Ever, a massive holiday giveaway to families in need.
The owners of Mr. Biggs hope to bow out with a flourish, calling Mr. Biggs’ final two months a “Going Away Party,” featuring discounts on passes and parties.
Just a few years ago, Mr. Biggs was in expansion mode. Li’l Biggs — a smaller version of Mr. Biggs targeted at kids 10 and under — opened in 2008 at Stetson Hills and Powers boulevards on the east side of Colorado Springs; around the same time, Mr. Biggs took over Fat City family entertainment center in Littleton and transformed it into a second Mr. Biggs.
But in 2009, Mr. Biggs sold the Littleton center and it became Fun City. And Li’ll Biggs closed at the start of last year.
