Analyzing the upcoming state wrestling competition
Here’s the full rundown of the state wrestling tournament as it pertains to area teams:
Class 5A
Top team: Pomona has been ranked No. 1 all season and qualified 10 wrestlers, seven of them ranked in the top four in their weight class.
Teams to watch: Pine Creek has been a close second to Pomona all year and also sent 10 to the Pepsi Center, including six regional champions. Defending champion Coronado put eight in the tournament, led by defending 112-pound and 113 favorite junior Adrian Cordova.
Top title contenders: Cordova and Pine Creek junior Geordan Martinez both look to defend titles. Martinez is looking for his third title, and both are ranked No. 1. Senior Josh Schoenberger, 182 pounds, narrowly missed a title last year and is undefeated this season. Pine Creek’s Jerry McGinty was ranked No. 1 until a knee injury sidelined him in January. He is ranked third.
Upset threats: Pine Creek’s Brandon Tribble (195 pounds No. 4), Ian Kluckman (285 No. 4), Alex Markowski (160 No. 4), Chris Cos (113 No. 5) and Trenton Watson (106 No. 4), Fountain-Fort Carson’s Seth Wilson (170 No. 5); Coronado’s Trevor Powers (170 No. 4), Devin House (126 No. 5) and Devan Cruz (132 No. 5).
The pressure is on: For Pine Creek to top Pomona, Eagles regional champions Alex Smith (152 No. 6) and Derrick Ortiz (145 No. 6) will likely need to place better than their rankings. Both have the chance for some key head-to-head matchups with the top teams in the tournament.
Difference makers: Markowski, Tribble and Kluckman have risen to the occasion this season, providing quality depth.
First-round match to watch: At 126 pounds, Fountain-Fort Carson senior Jacob Mondragon (No. 12) vs. Poudre’s Matt O’Donnell (No. 13). Mondragon has struggled at times after placing fourth at state a year ago. A strong first-round showing could propel Mondragon to more success on the big stage.
First-round match to watch (part II): Also in the 126 bracket, Pine Creek’s Andrew Wallace (27-13) and Grand Junction Central’s Jacob Rubalcaba (27-14) have nearly identical records, but Wallace ranks 18th vs. Rubalcaba’s seventh. Wallace, who took third at regionals, losing to the top-ranked wrestler in the state, could pull off the upset and earn some key team points for the Eagles.
First-round match to watch (part III): McGinty drew fifth-ranked Brady Tellis of Pine Creek in the first round. The winner will likely hook up with No. 6 Torrey Williams of Ponderosa in the quarterfinals.
Class 4A
Top team: Defending champions Windsor qualified 10 wrestlers for state and could contend for as many as four individual titles.
Teams to watch: Discovery Canyon has climbed from the preseason No. 7 ranking to second behind Windsor and also qualified 10 wrestlers, led by top-ranked juniors AJ Rees (113) and Steve Turner (120). Rees was state champion at 112 a year ago. Thompson Valley qualified 13, but may not have top-end title talent. Pueblo South has top-end talent and depth with nine wrestlers in the tournament.
Top title contenders: Rees is primed to repeat as champion, and Turner has a favorable draw to the semifinals. Air Academy senior Rip Price (220 No. 3), Mesa Ridge senior Devante Johnson (160 No. 3) and Discovery Canyon sophomore Adrian Mack (170 No. 4) have been strong all year with several tournament titles under their belts.
Upset threats: Johnson, Price, Mack, Jeremy Grooms of Cheyenne Mountain (170 No. 3), Garrett Adams of Discovery Canyon (160 No. 4), Falcon’s Kyle Soulka (160 No. 5), Sand Creek’s Tuli Laulu (285 No. 5). Johnson and Laulu are returning runners-up. Vista Ridge senior Quintin Riley is ranked No. 2 at 195, but would have to knock off Dwight Howes, whom some regard as the best wrestler in the state.
The pressure is on: Garrett Adams of Discovery Canyon was ranked No. 1 for a time this season but faltered in January and dropped to No. 4 in the rankings. A strong showing from him could help lift the Thunder to a team title. Teammates Mack, Turner and Robert Martinez (132 No. 7) likely also need to place in the top four. But all are battled tested after a difficult schedule of highly competitive tournaments.
Difference makers: Turner, Martinez, Mack and Adams are known quantities and keys to the Thunder’s hopes. Teammates Bryce Oberg (126 No. 17), a senior, and sophomore David Traynor (195 No. 7) experienced state last year and could make a jump. Senior Jon Bratton (220) and sophomore Tyler Oberg (145 No. 9) have wrestled well of late and could get some valuable points.
First-round match to watch: Price’s hopes for a state title will be tested right off the bat. After a disappointing third place in regionals he drew an opening matchup with top-ranked Timmy Ornelas of Fort Lupton, who is also smarting from a loss in the regional final.
First-round match to watch (part II): The 160 bracket features seven local wrestlers, making for some potentially familiar matchups in the early rounds. The best of those could be between Adams and Soulka. The next spot in the bracket pits No. 6 Caleb Cuneio, a junior from Air Academy, against No. 7 Vinny Gonzales of Windsor.
First-round match to watch (part III): Regional champ Tyler Thalhammer (126 No. 7), a junior from Palmer Ridge, won his regional and earned a top seed, but drew No. 1 Jonathan Stelling of Broomfield in the first round.
Class 3A
Top team: Alamosa
Teams to watch: Barring a run of bad luck for the Mean Moose, Olathe may be the only team with a shot at beating them. Florence is the top Pikes Peak area team in the tournament with seven wrestlers in the state bracket.
Top title contenders: Sophomore Caleb Cole (106 No. 5), junior Dillon Bellino (113 No. 4) and senior James Brown (182 No. 3) of Florence, Ellicott senior Brandon Simmons (138 No. 3), and senior Zach Dillon (160 No. 4) of The Classical Academy.
Upset threats: All of the above would be considered upsets.
The pressure is on: With no area teams in the hunt for a state title it’s hard to say the pressure is on anyone. If Dillon finishes in the top four he will be the highest placer in school history.
Difference makers: Cole and Bellino set the tone as the first two to hit the mat for the Huskies.
First-round match to watch: Simmons drew a first-round bout with No. 9 sophomore Simon Schaefer of Monte Vista.
First-round match to watch (part II): Dillon gets a tough matchup in the opener, squaring off against No. 8 Kyle Shoop of Trinidad.
Class 2A
Top team: Paonia
Team to watch: Rocky Ford and Burlington are perennial powers.
Top title contenders: Ignacio senior Alex Pena (126 No. 1) is looking for his fourth state title. Peyton senior Wade Top (182 No. 3) has had a solid season and could reach the top of the podium.
Upset threats: Peyton sophomore Rich Lancaster (170) and senior Steve Schuelke (285 No. 9) are the only other area wrestlers in the tournament.
The pressure is on: Pena?
First-round match to watch: Tope drew No. 13 senior Connor Pigg of Rye — a potentially competitive opener that could get Tope ready for a second-round matchup with No. 1 Tyler Korf of Yuma.
First-round match to watch (part II): Schuelke gets an even matchup with senior No. 8 Patrick Brown of Rangely to start the tournament. The winner has the inside track to the semifinals where the going will get tough.
Pine Creek’s Trenton Watson, top, could be a big factor at 106 pounds as the Eagles need all the points they can get to make a run at a 5A wrestling title this weekend. Photo by CHRISTIAN MURDOCK, THE GAZETTE
