BOOK GROUPIE: ‘Spy’ may be memorable, but everyone needs some help

About a year ago, I recommended a book in this column by author Ted Bell. The book features a spy named Alex Hawke, and is appropriately titled “Spy.”It is one of a six-title series that features Hawke. While there are moments when the series feels a bit forced — Hawke has lost both parents, two loves and an unborn child to violent deaths — other moments make the series feel real and downright touching.I recently read the latest book in the series, “Warlord.” The story begins with Hawke, a British-American gentleman MI6 operative, drinking himself to death in Bermuda. Hawke has given up all hope after losing his soulmate on his last mission. But a call in the middle of one night — from Britain’s Prince Charles — puts Hawke back in business. The royal family has received a death threat. The threat is written by the same hand that threatened and then assassinated a royal patriarch 30 years before. Not only must Hawke find this killer, he must also stop a terrorist organization bent on destroying the United States and her allies. With James Bond-like finesse, Alex Hawke and his friends travel the globe to save the world — all within 600 pages of sheer entertainment.

You know, it’s hard to remember book titles, and readers often ask about columns I wrote months before. They remember some of the plot and want to read the book, but they can’t recall the title.I have featured nearly 200 books in this column, so titles sometimes escape me, too.To help combat this problem, I’ve started a page in Goodreads. Goodreads is a social book-recommendation website. On it, a person can catalogue the books they’ve read and intend to read, learn about other members’ shelves, and discuss books. Goodreads is an excellent place to keep track of books and to recommend them to others. There are more than five million Goodread members and that number continues to grow.I regularly add books to my Goodreads shelves, along with my impression of the books. My shelves are divided into a few different genres, so people who follow me can find the types of books they most enjoy. If you would like to follow me, please visit www.good reads.com and search for Anita Laydon Miller.‘Miller welcomes book suggestions.
