Candlebox at the Black Sheep

After a nearly decade long creative and legal hiatus, the songwriting duo of Kevin Martin and Peter Klett, otherwise known as Candlebox, re-emerged in 2008 with their 4th studio album, “Into the Sun.”  That was quickly followed up by the live CD/DVD release, “Alive in Seattle,”that same fall.  Now into the 3rd year of what could rightfully be labeled a comeback tour, this Northwest quintet rounded out by Drummer Scott Mercado, Bassist Adam Kury and Rhythm Guitarist Sean Hennesy paid a visit to the Black Sheep on Saturday evening to show the Springs what we’ve been missing out on for such a long time. 

Grabbing throughout the evening from their repertoire of singles such as, “Far Behind,”  “Change” and “You,” while also sprinkling in a fair mixture of their newer material for the crowd to become aware of, Candlebox delivered a performance that showed a band in their sweet spot. As both individuals and a group, the musicianship was on par for the level of seasoned veterans which this band is, and it seemed as though they were all truly enjoying the evenings festivities, so really, what more could someone want? 

Answer: The opening act, Miggs!

Touted as “one of the best bands you’ve never heard of” (music-reviewer.com) this Florida trio did something that only a handful of bands has ever managed to do in my 20 some years of working in this industry, and that is, mesmerize me!  From the moment that Vocalist/Guitarist Don Miggs, Drummer Walker Adams and Bassist Michael Lombardo took the stage, something in the air told me to pay close attention to these musicians, and pay attention I did.  As for one of the only times in my life that I can ever remember, by the end of the 1st song all I wanted to do was put down my camera and just listen, and that’s exactly what I ended up doing!  And from me, that is the largest compliment I could ever give a band.

 It’s rare nowadays for a band to have even 1 of the natural “T’s” (Talent, Tenacity, Timing or Tone), but to have the entire package, well that’s just flat out amazing!  These guys remind me of what good old-fashioned rock-n-roll is supposed to be about, down and dirty fun!  What a breath of fresh air to an industry so in need of oxygen.  My advice, go out and see these guys quick, while they’re still able to play intimate clubs, as I have a feeling that before to long, there may only be nosebleed seats available. 

 Thank you for such a memorable evening, and Candlebox, thank you for helping to introduce Miggs to the world!  I will most definitely catch you next time your anywhere near this state!!
