Stolen trailer returned to scouts
Good things come to those who serve pancake breakfasts.Holy Trinity Catholic Church’s Boy Scout Troop 68 has spent years helping the community, cleaning yards for Earth Day and cooking breakfasts at the church. So, it was upsetting for scout committee chair Mike Bartusek to discover the 18-scout troop’s utility trailer was stolen late Friday night from an alley behind the church — the trailer’s home for more than ten years. But barely half a day after police got the report, the trailer was recovered in the 3100 block of north Hancock, not far from the church.“I felt very good – exuberant,” Bartusek said about hearing the news. He had thought he would never see the trailer again. This isn’t the first time a Boy Scout trailer has been stolen. One was taken from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Aurora last year. The utility trailer contained tents and cooking supplies for the Boy Scouts to use on camping trips. Six of the tents and one cooking set remain missing, Bartusek said, but the trailer is undamaged.“It’s frustrating, but I’m glad they found it,” scout master Tom McClernan said. “We’re going to a summer camp next week and we were getting a little worried with what we would do without the equipment.”Bartusek first realized something was amiss last Tuesday when his discovered that the door of the trailer was open.“I thought one of the leaders forgot to lock it,” he said. The trailer was in place when Bartusek drove past Friday afternoon. Saturday morning it was gone.Colorado Springs Police Officer James Antonio said someone called the department around 2 p.m. with information about the trailer. The police department sent out an electronic message to officers with information about the stolen trailer.“We do a pretty good job of locating these” Antonio said, minutes before he received the news that the trailer was found.
