Contempt hearing against Bruce postponed for a week

A Denver judge today pushed back the hearing date for Douglas Bruce’s contempt-of-court hearing to Aug. 25.

Denver attorney David Lane, who was retained by Bruce in early August, sought the request from District Judge Brian Whitney because of a scheduling conflict.

The Colorado Attorney General’s Office is pursuing the contempt case against Bruce  after he eluded process servers 30 time who were trying to serve him with a judicial order.

That order, also issued by Whitney, directed Bruce to make himself available for a deposition in conjunction with a campaign finance complaint involving Amendment 60, Amendment 61 and Proposition 101.

The trio of measures will be on the November ballot and greatly reduce the ability of local and state governments to borrow money or raise taxes.

Bruce is the author of the 1992 Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, which has limited government growth.

Bruce has said he is not involved in the three ballot issues, but evidence and testimony presented during  two-day campaign finance hearing this spring found he was deeply involved.

Bruce not only helped craft the ballot language, but also provided proponents with legal advice from a e-mail address, testimony showed.
