Second pit bull incident involving children in two days
A young boy was knocked down by a pit bull today at an apartment complex on Coleridge Avenue in east Colorado Springs, police reported.
The boy had some scratches on the back of his head and neck and some marks on his back, and was taken to a hospital as a precaution, according to Dave Larson, maintenance supervisor at the Esperanza Village apartments.
Larson said some children were playing on the complex playground when the dog showed up and frightened them. They ran to get on a play structure and the dog knocked down the smallest child and pinned it down.
“It wasn’t a mean dog,” said Larson, who quickly caught the dog and locked it in the office. “It was playing, but that’s how pit bulls play.”
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region picked up the brown pit bull, which had no tag and wasn’t familiar to Larson.
The incident was the second involving pit bulls and young children in two days. On Monday, a 6-year-old was bitten in the face by a pit bull and had to be hospitalized. The dog was euthanized.
