6-year-old girl attacked by pit bull

A 6-year-old girl suffered extensive injuries to her face this afternoon after a pit bull attacked her.

The attack occurred around 1:15 p.m. in the 3600 block of Dogwood Drive.

The dog’s owner, Rachel Goran, was cited for illegal ownership of a dangerous dog, a misdemeanor, said Stacey Candella, Humane Society spokeswoman. The dog, an unneutered male, is en route to the Humane Society, where it will be euthanized, Candella said.

According to Candella, 40 Colorado children are hospitalized annually because of dog bites; 800,000 people nationwide suffer dog bites.

“It doesn’t matter the species,” Candella said. “The community needs to make sure their dogs are licensed, socialized, spayed or neutered, supervised and safely housed.”

The girl will require surgery, police said.
