Naval Academy spending review ongoing
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — U.S. Naval Academy officials are working with Navy financial regulatory specialists to ensure a variety of lapses in government spending rules don’t happen again.
Navy Rear Adm. Denny Moynihan, the Navy’s spokesman, spoke about the remediation process Tuesday, a day after the Navy released the findings of a 110-page report by the Office of the Naval Inspector General.
Moynihan says areas of improvement include accounting practices, asset control, invoicing and contracting. While some actions already have been taken, a full list is expected by 2010 because the review is ongoing.
One of the biggest spending irregularities involved an off-the-books slush fund that was used to pay for tailgate parties, luncheons and other events for senior academy personnel.
