A 3-year-old playing with a lighter and a candle started a house fire Friday afternoon, leaving a family of three out of a home for at least one night.

It took 30 firefighters 36 minutes to put out the blaze in the 1300 block of Hamstead Court. The fire started upstairs and spread into the attic, where it was fed by today’s high winds, said Lt. Mike Smaldino, fire spokesman. Firefighters cut holes in the roof to get to the fire.

Crews had been on scene for more than an hour when firefighters pulled the family dog from the home. The dog was given oxygen and taken to a veterinarian. A cat is still missing, but the homeowner believes it was outside when the fire started, Smaldino said.

Investigators said the damage estimate is $85,000. This is the third house fire this year started by children, Smaldino said.

The Rocky Mountain regional development camp ended Friday in Colorado Springs, a potential launching pad to junior and under-23 World Cup and world championship teams for 21 teenagers.
