Fire crews knock down roof fire

Colorado Springs firefighters are putting out a roof fire that started when workers were laying new shingles on a home just east of downtown.

The fire started around 3 p.m., and crews had to attack flames that spread to part of the attic of the house in the 300 block of South Prospect Street, said Lt. James Eddy, spokesman for the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Three people live in the house. Firefighters were not immediately sure if the tenants would be able to stay in the house tonight.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Eddy said.
