GAME GUARANTEES

An athletic department typically will pay out-of-conference opponents for coming to its campus to play a game. And in some sports — like football and men’s basketball — the costs can be huge.

Air Force does not pay for nor receive money from football games against Army, Navy or Mountain West Conference opponents — because the teams play annually, alternating home and away games.

For the other two games each season, the academy typically comes close to breaking even. In 2009 Air Force paid Nicholls State $300,000 to come to the academy (and paid $250,000 to buy North Texas out of the teams’ contract) but received $650,000 for playing at Minnesota.

Air Force will receive just $75,000 for its 2011 game at Wake Forest because the teams’ contract was negotiated more than 10 years ago. The 2011 game is a return game for the Falcons’ 1998 home opener against the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest originally was to play host to Air Force in 2000, but the game was postponed twice. The $75,000 will not cover even the Falcons’ flight.

TEAM TRAVEL

All academy programs’ travel for games and events is funded by appropriated funds, save for football. Mainly because of the size and unique travel requirements of the football team, its travel is funded primarily by nonappropriated funds.

Team travel expenses include airfare, lodging, rental cars

charter buses and meals for all away competitions. The athletic department’s intercollegiate logistics department coordinates all team travel, working directly with the academy’s commercial ticket office.

RECRUITING

Air Force coaches determine how to spend the money in their recruiting budgets — where they’ll travel, which coaches will recruit which athletes, etc. — within the confines of Federal and Air Force Academy Athletic Association regulations. According to the academy, the Joint Federal Travel Regulation “sets very specific limits on what can be spent on each commodity.
