Kush magazine lets medical pot users read all about it
The brunette in this magazine centerfold is sultry. Sure.
But the seedy turn-on is her sidekick: Super Silver Haze, the hazel buds of a female pot plant.
A bud-and-babe pullout is a staple in Kush magazine.
The glossy monthly is on the freebie publication racks at 7-Eleven stores, King Soopers, Blockbuster or a pot shop near you.
Kush debuted in Colorado in December to cash in on the state’s medical reefer madness.
“It is really the lifestyle of medical marijuana users,” said Bob Selan, CEO of the California-based company.
About 75,000 Kush magazines are distributed monthly in Colorado, he said.
The niche publication started a year ago in California by Kush publisher Michael Lerner, a medical marijuana patient who discovered an untapped reading market for tokers. There are two Kush editions in California, with plans to expand Kush to other states. Freelancers provide the content.
Colorado Kush editions have local stories and numerous ads from dispensaries around the state, including the Pikes Peak region.
It’s a cannabis-card-carrying-coupon-lover’s dream, loaded with discounts on gourmet grams and “Free Joint Friday” specials.
Stories in the latest 130-page issue cover fishing, baseball and music along with pot politics, herb recipes and moments in weed history. (Flashback to May 1967 when members of The Rolling Stones were busted for smoking dope.)
To steal from a Kush headline: The days of smuggling seeds back from Amsterdam in the hems of your pants are gone.
Gone also, it seems, are the days when people dashing in for a Slurpee might freak out over a publication peddling pot.
Sandy Polikratis, a 7-Eleven cashier, said it is popular with customers at her northwest Colorado Springs store.
She said those who pick it up know what to expect.
“Everybody knows what it’s about,” said Polikratis, who reads the magazine when bored.“The ‘kush’ gives it away.”
Just in case you didn’t know: Kush is a high-grade strain of weed. Good stuff, man.
