Castle Rock’s Bill Loeffler had a dream round Thursday, shooting a 3-under-par 69 that he said exceeded his expectations.

Friday’s round was more of a nightmare for the club pro and co-owner of Highlands Ranch Golf Club. Loeffler, who started on the back nine, was even-par through three holes. But he played a nine-hole stretch (his seventh through 15th holes) in 11-over en route to an 82. He had a two-day total of 7-over 151 and barely made the cut on the number..

It was not a good day for local golfers, however. Colorado Springs native R.W. Eaks shot an 82 to fall to 12 over; David Arbuckle of Colorado Springs shot 79 to slip to 10 over; and Michael Zaremba of Pueblo West shot 81 and finished 12 over. Gary Hallberg, who is 2 over, made the cut.

Lehman reboundsTom Lehman birdied three of his last five holes to finish 1 under for the day. He’s 5 under for the tournament, two shots off the lead.

Lehman bogeyed his first two holes (the 10th and 11th, as he started on the back nine) perhaps because he still was smarting from the Phoenix Suns’ last-second loss to the Lakers in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals on Thursday night.

“I can’t believe it,” the Scottsdale, Ariz., resident said. “I’m still angry.”

Etc.Fuzzy Zoeller withdrew after completing nine holes Friday. Zoeller, who was 5 over for the tournament, cited a swollen finger that was affecting his play. Rod Spittle withdrew Thursday night after learning of the death of his father. Spittle shot a 74. … Tom Watson shot a 4-over 76 and is 5-over heading into the weekend.
