Members of National Mill Dog Rescue will be processing today nearly 20 dogs, some of which were picked up in Nashville, Tenn., at shelters that are overcrowded with animals due to recent flooding in that city.

The Tennessee dogs include a Basset Hound, two Labrador-Retriever mixes, two young Boxer mixes,  and a cream-colored mutt who was covered in ticks and was suffering from mastitis, director Theresa Strader said in an interview.

Strader said authorities in Tennessee have prevented shelters from euthanizing dogs suspected as pets. Due to space constraints, however, animals who were not suspected as being pets were scheduled to be euthanized, including the animals picked up by the Colorado Springs organization.

The group also rescued 10 dogs from a puppy mill in Missouri, including Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Maltese, Yorkies, and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that was immediately hospitalized with pneumonia.

 Anyone interested in adopting one of these rescue dogs can get more information by going to www.milldogrescue.org. After filling out an application, the applicants will be contacted by a member of the organization and a home visit scheduled.

“We’re very careful about where our guys go,” Strader said.

National Mill Dog Rescue is a Springs-based non-profit that has rescued over 3,300 dogs from puppy mills to date.
