BOULDER • Colorado rising junior quarterback Tyler Hansen led the Gold team to a 37-27 victory over rising senior quarterback Cody Hawkins and the Black team in Saturday’s spring game at Folsom Field.

But Hansen hasn’t yet won the Buffaloes’ starting quarterback job. At least not yet.

Coach Dan Hawkins — Cody’s father — refrained from anointing Hansen the Buffaloes’ 2010 signal-caller Saturday.

“We’ll figure that out when we get close to (the 2010 opener against) Colorado State,” Dan Hawkins said.

“It’s great for our guys to keep battling. … I don’t know why you would ever, in any situation, for the most part — unless you had a guy coming back who had won 10 games — say, ‘Well, yeah, you’re the guy.’ But I thought Tyler had a really, really good scrimmage and he had a really good camp. Cody played well.”

Both quarterbacks were sharp Saturday, with Hansen completing 17-of-22 passes for 170 yard and three touchdowns, and Hawkins completing 20-of-26 for 220 yards and two scores.

But Hansen, who started two games as a freshman and replaced Hawkins as Colorado’s starter last season after five games, could claim victory in the quarterbacks’ head-to-head matchup.

“To be honest with you, I wasn’t even thinking about that,” Hansen said. “I wanted to win the game.”

Hansen also was on top of the depth chart released before the game.

“Any time you can be on top of something and win the competition for right now, it feels really good,” Hansen said. “It means I’m doing something right.”

Cody Hawkins declined to speak to the media after the game.

NotesQuarterback Nick Hirschman made a splash with the Gold team in a brief appearance in the fourth quarter. Hirschman, who completed high school early and enrolled at Colorado for the spring semester, hit his one and only throw, an 83-yard touchdown pass to Andre Simmons. He also ran 21 yards with his only carry. … Hawkins hit rising senior tackle Nate Solder for a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. … Hawkins’ favorite receiver was Kyle Cefalo, a transfer who played with Hawkins in high school at Bishop Kelly in Boise, Idaho. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Cefalo caught a game-high 12 passes for a game-high 144 yards.
