Colorado Springs firefighters jumped to extinguish two small fires this evening amid wind gusts of up to 35 mph and a growing, dirt-filled haze settling over the Pikes Peak region.

One fire around 6:15 p.m. in the evergreen bushes in front of the home at 150 Chantrey Ct. produced a lot of smoke, but did not spread beyond the bushes, said Lt. Michael Smaldino, fire spokesman.

A second fire at the same time at a campsite on South Tejon Street was also put out quickly. There were reports that a man’s pants were on fire, but Smaldino did not have any reports of injuries.

With windy days in the region are expected to continue, Smaldino said firefighters are expecting another red flag day Tuesday. High winds and temperatures and low humidity make for perfect wildfire conditions, so fire officials ask that people be extra vigilant in preventing sparks.
