Springs family shakes its way to dance-off victory

They shook, rattled and rolled. They shimmied and twisted. And, most importantly, they caught it all on video. The Lopez family of Colorado Springs just won $5,000 for their rhythmic efforts, as the national winners of a family dance-off. The contest, sponsored by Primrose Schools and the Children’s Miracle Network, also resulted in a $30,000 gift to The Children’s Hospital in Denver.“The $5,000 is awesome, but that $30,000 is the real prize,” Carlos Lopez said. “Denver’s Children can do so much good with that.”The family collected their prize on Thursday at the Primrose School of Springs Ranch, and showed the kids some of their hot moves.Carlos and Heidi Lopez, along with Calia, 2, and Caden, 8 months, were featured in the video. Heidi, a choir teacher at Pine Creek High School, was the ringer in the family. She chose the catchy music — “Gitchi Gitchi Goo (I Love You)” from the kids show “Phineas and Ferb” — and led the choreography.“She’s the real brains and the kids are the talent,” said Carlos Lopez, a principal at French Elementary School in the Widefield School District. They spent an entire Saturday shooting and editing video, with help from fellow teacher Dan Jeppson, capturing many happy accidents with the kids as they goofed around. Their 30-second video beat out 157 entrants for the top prize.Carlos Lopez said no dance-off will be necessary to decide what to do with the prize money: it’s headed straight into a college savings account for their young children.
