YOUR SPACE: Mom will sing, dance for tub of fake butter
Brooke McLay likes to get a little wild in the kitchen.
One night last November she got a lotta wild.
And what the 33-year-old leggy brunette did with a tub of margarine to disco music … well, let’s just say she regretted it.
But the regrets came too late. Her husband filmed the kitchen romp and — you guessed it — it’s on the Internet.
“I can’t believe I did it,” says the Colorado Springs mother of four.
It’s hard to believe what some people will do with fake butter, and to the gyrating tune of “Turn the Beat Around.”
The apron-clad housewife was a top contender belting a revamped “Turn the Tub Around” in a national “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” ad campaign.
Brooke’s fake butter boogie fits with other contest videos on her cooking blog: tongue-n-cheeky.com. In “Red Hot Lover,” she professes love to a pomegranate. In a recipe video, she parlays her zany comedic talents into the multiple personalities of Sybil to make cheesecake bonbons.
It has paid off for the blogging baketress. “In the last year and a half entering contests I’ve made more than $10,000,” she says. “The best part is that it allows me to be a stay-at-home mom.”
Residuals from turning her tub around keep pouring in, despite not winning the grand prize in online voting.
After submitting the video last fall, Brooke was relieved when she didn’t hear back from the margarine moguls.
“I thought, I’m so glad that fell through. My reputation is saved as a sane person,” says Brooke, who had kept the escapade secret from people at church.
But what happened in the kitchen didn’t stay in the kitchen after all. The congratulatory call came in January to tune into “American Idol,” where she was featured in the commercial break. Friends and neighbors couldn’t stop laughing. Strangers at stores recognized her.
Her kids’ friends call her The Butter Mom.
“She’s a good mom,” says son Andrew, 11, “and sometimes weird.”
Food is her mojo. “When there are so many other things that lure my kids away from home, I can lure them back with colorful food and things that taste good, feel warm and are comforting,” she says.
Brooke moved here from Utah 11 years ago with her husband, John, a Latter Day Saints seminary teacher for high school students.
She has a degree in education. “My pipe dream is living on screen,” she says.
