Springs motorcycle officer on DUI patrol injured in crash

A Colorado Springs Police officer on DUI patrol was injured early Saturday when his motorcycle collided with a suspected drunken driver.

Sgt. Philip LeBeau was driving south on Tejon Street at Vermijo Avenue about 1 a.m. when police said a KIA Optima driven by Raymond Laracuente, 27, turned left in front of him.

LeBeau’s motorcycle hit the car. He was thrown over the top of the vehicle and about 45 feet.

“He had multiple facial injuries, a broken leg and road rash,” Lt. Elden Stromer said.

A Memorial Hospital spokeswoman said LeBeau is in fair condition at the downtown hospital.

Laracuente was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault and DUI. He is being held in the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
