Cheyenne Mountain 4, Monarch 1At Apex West Rink: Kevin Davis and Jack Benecke put Cheyenne Mountain up by two in the first period, and the Indians relied on a tough penalty kill to see them through.

“We felt very positive coming in tonight after the wins over Palmer and Steamboat,” Indians coach Mike Provenzano said. “We did a tremendous job killing off penalties there in the third period, and I was really happy to see everyone stepping up to contribute.”

Cheyenne Mountain (11-7-2)  kept Monarch (13-7-0) from capitalizing on two separate five-on-three situations in the third period, and allowed only a single power play goal in the final minute of the second period.Nick Vail and Ian Hodson also scored for the Indians, who saw production from all three lines. Cheyenne Mountain will face Valor Christian next.

 

Rampart 4, Aspen 3 (2OT)At Family Sports Hamilton Rink: Kevin Franklin scored near the eight minute mark of the second overtime to lead the Rams (13-5-2) over the Skiers (10-7-3). Daniel Fullerton scored twice for Rampart, including an unassisted third-period goal to send the game to overtime. Seth Makey put the Rams up 2-1 with a shorthanded tally in the second period, sending Rampart to the second round

 

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Castle View 57, Harrison 53At Harrison: Despite 29 points from Xavier Ford and 15 from Chris Chandler, the Panthers couldn’t hold onto their lead in the final minutes.”We were up by five but we had a lot of critical turnovers there at the end,” Harrison coach Jerry Austin said. “Whenever we play Castle View it always ends up being a really strong matchup, and that’s how it was tonight. They made some plays down the stretch, and we didn’t.”

 

Lewis-Palmer 76, Mitchell 57At Mitchell: Josh Scott finished with 27 points and the Pikes Peak 5A-4A No. 4 Rangers (18-5) scored 48 in the second half to seal the win.  David Snipes scored 15 for the Marauders (13-10).

 

Palmer 65, Pine Creek 58At Palmer: 5A-4A No. 5 Palmer outscored Pine Creek 21-13 in the final quarter, and Terrell Brown (19 points) was one of four Terrors (18-5) scoring in double digits. Landon Rogers and Devin Kastrup each scored 11 for Pine Creek (3-20).

 

Doherty 84, Liberty 79At Doherty: Wes McKenzie poured in 41 points, but the Lancers (10-13) couldn’t hang onto a six-point halftime lead over the Spartans (15-9).

 

Wasson 65, Woodland Park 39At Wasson: Dylan James scored 25 to lead the Thunderbirds (10-11), who outscored the Panthers 38-16 in the second half without leading scorer Deven Bernett.”We couldn’t depend on Deven as we usually do,  and everyone really stepped up and filled in,” Wasson coach Damion Copeland said. “Dexter (Jackson) had 10 steals and really did a great job distributing for us.”The Panthers (2-21) were led by Austin Burgess’ 11 points.

 

Hanover 42, Simla 37At Simla: Chanse Mitchell scored 18 to lead Simla (10-9) over visiting Hanover (5-13).

 

Legend 70, Vista Ridge 58At Legend: Bobby Dalbec scored 16 and Phil McNiff added 14 points to lead Legend (11-8) over visiting Vista Ridge (5-15).

 

Elbert 66, Edison 51At Elbert: Kyle Brown scored 16 for Elbert (14-4), while teammate Travis Hutchens tacked on 12 points. Mason Wilkinson scored a game-high 22 points for Edison (8-9).

 

Sierra 69, Mesa Ridge 50At Mesa Ridge: Carlos Torres scored 13 for Mesa Ridge (5-18) and teammate Andre Terry added 11 as Mesa Ridge fell short of 5A-4A No. 1 Sierra (21-2).

 

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Mesa Ridge 66, Sierra 42

At Sierra: Led by 19 points from Kaitlyn Mileto and 12 from Leanndra Gilbert,  the 5A-4A No. 2 Grizzlies (21-2) claimed the 4A Metro league title.

“This is the first girls’ league title that Mesa Ridge has won in any sport, and I think all the girls felt that this was pretty special tonight,” coach Eric Hulen said. “We pulled our starters early in the second half and we just were really impressed with the way everyone played.”

The Grizzlies scored 25 points in the fourth quarter and had 10 different scorers. The Stallions (8-14) were led by Sylvia Black’s 16 points.

 

Air Academy 69, Coronado 45At Coronado: Kate Louthan and Tori Reifschneider each scored 12 for the 5A-4A No. 1 Kadets (21-2), who blanked the Cougars 18-0 in the first quarter. Kelly Schroeder scored a game-high 14 points for Coronado (2-21).

 

Wasson 40, Woodland Park 36At Woodland Park: Kayle Esquibel scored 12 and Ashly Herndon added 11 to lead the Thunderbirds (2-18), who withstood an attempted second-half rally from the Panthers (4-19). Woodland Park outscored Wasson 25-18 in the final half but came up short.

 

Palmer 69, Pine Creek 53At Pine Creek: Taylor Torres (21 points) and Kim Beard (15 points) led the 5A-4A No. 5 Terrors (18-5), who scored 29 in the third quarter to clinch it. Carly Detter and Shannon Kelly each scored 10 for Pine Creek (14-9).

 

Falcon 49, Cheyenne Mountain 39At Falcon: Led by 13 points from Shelby Goniea, Falcon (17-6) outscored 5A-4A No. 3 Cheyenne Mountain (18-5)  by 12 in the second quarter to take control.

 

Evangelical Christian Academy 65, Pikes Peak Christian 37At Pikes Peak Christian: Brianna Euken’s 21 points couldn’t save Pikes Peak Christian (3-15). ECA (15-3) scored 30 in the second half, building on a 35-8 halftime lead.
