This week’s peak performer: Richie Bailey, Falcon

Richie Bailey knows about endurance.

The senior wrestler erased a 5-1 deficit against No. 2 Joey Costanza of Pueblo County on Saturday to win the Class 4A Region 4 title in the 135-pound weight class. Bailey, who is a senior at Hilltop Baptist but wrestles for Falcon, tied the match at 6-6 near the end of regulation and scored two near falls in the second overtime to win the title.

“I knew I had to keep it close and when I was down by four, I knew that was it,” Bailey said. “I told myself to step it up and I think that’s where the stamina just kicked in.”

Bailey will face Greeley Central’s Todd Stoltz in the first round of the state tournament this weekend.

QUICK HITS

What do you crave most during the season?

Soda. I have to cut sugar, so at the end of the season I always drink a huge Coke and have Reese’s.

Do you have any ideas for a senior prank?

No, but we need to get some. When I was a freshman, my class was larger than the senior class, so we didn’t really have any played on us.

What’s your ideal spring break location?

Our cabin up near Woodland Park. We camp and hunt and go four-wheeling.

Post-match reward?

Chocolate milk, but only after tournaments.

Do you watch pro wrestling?

No, but I do like UFC. Anderson Silva, below, is cool.
