AFA notes: Stewart getting closer, Schafer feeling better

Air Force sophomore guard/forward Taylor Stewart had an x-ray on his surgically repaired wrist Monday, and the results were encouraging, coach Jeff Reynolds said.

Stewart, who started seven of the Falcons’ first 11 games, has been out of the lineup since breaking his wrist against Niagara on Dec. 28. Reynolds said Stewart could be back in “10 to 12 days.”

Stewart has been wearing a soft cast and using a bone stimulator, Reynolds said, which enhances recovery time.

Meanwhile, sophomore center Sammy Schafer, who has been out since late November because of post-concussion symptoms, is feeling slightly better, according to Reynolds. Trainers are allowing him to walk on a treadmill and shoot free throws, but he still can’t do anything as physically strenuous as even jogging.

Reynolds said he still doesn’t expect Schafer to be back this season, but that Schafer “definitely wants to play.”

“He’s at practice every day, and he says he feels up to it,” Reynolds said. “We’re hoping he’ll be back.”

Stucky travels

Scott Stucky accompanied the Falcons to San Diego and sat with the team on the bench. The sophomore guard re-tore the ACL that kept him out of last season during the summer. “He’s worked really hard,” on his recovery, Reynolds said.
