Air Force sophomore center Sammy Schafer, still feeling the effects of the concussion he suffered in late November, did not travel with the Falcons during their two-game road swing to Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. And he might not play again this season.

“I’m not sure we’ll get him back at this stage,” Air Force coach Jeff Reynolds said.

Schafer started Air Force’s first three games but has not played since.

Reynolds said Schafer is feeling better and his headaches are subsiding. But once the headaches go away completely, Schafer still would have to wait eight-to-10 days before he could start conditioning. Schafer “has not done anything physically,” Reynolds said, since shortly before the Falcons’ game against Charleston Southern on Nov. 28.

Schafer’s health could affect his status at the academy.

“If his health and his physical conditions stay status quo, then I think there would be some concerns and issues from the United States Air Force as to whether or not he could stay at the academy and whether he would be commissionable for those five years, his commitment,” Reynolds said.

Missing only twoWith senior forward/center Grant Parker’s return to the lineup last Saturday at Utah, the Falcons are missing only one other key contributor other than Schafer – sophomore guard/forward Taylor Stewart.

Stewart, who made seven starts and averaged 4.3 points in the Falcons’ first 11 games, will miss about three-and-a-half more weeks as he recovers from surgery on his broken wrist.
