This week’s peak performer: Jared Rieck, Coronado
Coronado wrestler Jared Rieck is making up for lost time. The junior missed his sophomore season with a knee injury, but has returned this year as a top wrestler in the 145-pound weight class.
On Saturday, Rieck upset undefeated Jose Cos of Falcon to win the final match of the Colorado Springs Metro Championships. Rieck joined three other Coronado winners, leading the Cougars to a 286-276 win over defending champion Pine Creek.
“I was nervous since I hadn’t wrestled him before,” Rieck said. “He scored in the last 10 seconds to tie it, and I just did my best not to let it get to overtime. He stood up and escaped, but I got the takedown.”Reick won the 7-5 decision.
Quick hits
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done to make weight? When I was a freshman, I was wrestling at 103. Sometimes I would have to spit to try to lose the last pound or so.
What’s the most you’ve lost/gained? I was up to 120 or more before my freshman season and I got down to 103.
Have you met Henry Cejudo?Yeah, I actually know him pretty well. I trained with him before he went to the Olympics at the OTC. He was down doing freestyle. He wrestled with my brother (Philip) at Coronado – he’s a great guy.
Do you have a signature move or a favorite way to pin? I like the banana split – you kind of wrap up their legs and then split them. Sometimes it can be kind of painful.
