Springs’ Kaugars sixth in short program at U.S. Figure Skating Championships
Colorado Springs’ Lukas Kaugars is sixth after the novice men’s short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The final is today.
Kaugars, who skates for the Broadmoor Skating Club, posted a score of 42.99. Salt Lake’s Nathan Chen, just 10 years old, and leads the competition with a score of 51.24. The Broadmoor’s Timothy Koleto is 12th with 31.63 points.
Competition in novice pairs began later Sunday.
The Broadmoor’s Max Aaron was leading the junior men when the final started late Sunday night, while Joshua Ferris stood fourth.
Broadmoor senior pair Caitlin Yankowskas and John Caughlin dropped from second after the short program — and in contention for one of two Olympic berths — to finish sixth after Saturday’s free skate. Tiffany Vise and Don Baldwin finished seventh, moving up after their ninth-place in the short program.
After Saturday’s short program, five of the top seven junior pairs teams have Broadmoor connections. Britney Simpson and Nathan Miller are second, just .42 behind leaders Felicia Zhang and Taylor Toth with 57.16. Carolyn-Ann Alba and Christopher Knierim are third with 52.43, followed by Gretchen Donlan and Andrew Speroff in fifth, Brittany Chase and Grant Marron in sixth and Brynn Carman and AJ Reiss seventh. The junior pairs final is today.
