Downtown Wells Fargo bank robbed

A man armed with a handgun robbed a Wells Fargo bank branch in downtown Colorado Springs this morning, escaping in a stolen car with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The robber pulled the gun on an employee and another person outside the bank at 410 S. Cascade Ave. around 7:30 a.m. The gunman then forced them to enter the bank with him.

The robber struck one of the two people during the robbery, causing a minor injury, before driving off in a bank employee’s vehicle he stole from the parking lot. The white Toyota Tacoma with temporary tags was recovered later in Manitou Springs.

The robber’s face was covered, and no description was released.

Anyone who has information about the suspect or his whereabouts is asked to contact the Colorado Springs Police Department at 719.444.7000, or Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers at 719.634.STOP (7867).

International Red Cross (ICRC) staff loaded emergency supplies bound for Haiti into a Ilyushin 76 aircraft at Cointrin airport, in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday. Troops and planeloads of food and medicine trickled into Haiti on Thursday to aid the traumatized nation still rattled by aftershocks from a catastrophic earthquake. The 40-ton cargo includes specialized kits to help treat the wounded and a kit sufficient to cover the basic health needs of 10,000 people over a period of three months. Furthermore, the plane will carry 3,000 body bags and materials such as one ton of chlorine that can be used for water treatment. It is due to arrive in or near Port-au-Prince today.
