Ochoa helps Danes hold off rally

If Fountain Valley was sweating the fact that it traded an 11-point lead for a two-point lead with 2 minutes left in the game, it didn’t show.

The Danes simply kept their cool when it mattered, beating Black Forest league rival Pikes Peak Christian 46-37 in girls’ basketball action Friday night.

“We had to kick in our mental game and focus on possession,” Fountain Valley coach Paula Walter said.

The Danes watched their 30-19 lead start to slip away at the end of the third quarter, as Ashley Stevens came up with a steal and key baskets to help bring the host Eagles within seven.

Brianna Euken then stepped it up in the fourth, capitalizing on her eighth steal of the night with a basket to cut the Eagles’ deficit to two.

But Fountain Valley’s Alex Ochoa had an answer, scoring five of her game-high 27 points in the final 2 minutes to seal the win for the Danes (4-2).

“They displayed real level-headedness (at the end),” Walter said about her players. “They showed a lot of maturity.”

Euken finished with 14 points to lead Pikes Peak Christian (2-3).
