Hockey: Sophomore’s two goals lift Indians over Doherty
Ian Hodson scored his second goal of the game with less than 3 minutes left in the third period to lift Cheyenne Mountain over Doherty 2-1 on Wednesday at Sertich Ice Center. Hodson’s goal snapped the 1-1 tie and gave the Indians enough momentum to shut down the Spartans’ final attack.
“I was late coming out, but I just got a great pass and was able to get it across the middle,” said Hodson, a sophomore. “We were getting pretty antsy with the tie, but we knew we were in it. We just had to put one in.”
Linemate Trevor Isbell picked up the puck in the neutral zone to feed Hodson, who gave the Indians the score that had been eluding them.
“We had been dominating play and we really got our forecheck going in the second, but we weren’t finding the net,” Indians coach Mike Provenzano said. “I can’t say enough about Ian and Trevor tonight. It was a beautiful pass.”
The Indians (3-3-1) outshot the Spartans (4-3-1) every period, including a nine-shot difference in the second.
Hodson put Cheyenne Mountain on the board in the second period, crashing the net and picking up a rebound to beat goaltender Konnor Barlow.
Spartans junior Braden Johnson opened the scoring with a first-period tally from the slot.
“We came out well but we took a lot of penalties in the second and just couldn’t find that goal at the end,” Doherty coach Erik Austin said. “We’re in our fourth year as a program, and we’re just getting better against them every year.”
