Rampart rallies on the ice but lead slips away late

Mistakes and poor penalties doomed Rampart in a 4-3 loss Wednesday to Monarch at Sertich Ice Center.

After overcoming a 2-0 deficit with three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 30 seconds in the second period, Rampart handed a free goal to the Coyotes before giving up a power-play goal with 2:51 to play.

“It’s still a young team learning,” coach Josh McIntosh said. “We absolutely dominated for a period and a half. Dumb mistakes bit us.”

After falling behind, the Rams (1-2) picked up the tempo and started playing their style of hockey, putting the puck on net and crashing the goal. Tyler Kettner scored on a shot that deflected off a defenseman. Matt Avila converted a backhand from about 5 feet. Logan Johnston put in a wraparound with Monarch goalie Dylan Haskell scrambling.

“We scored three goals the way we like to score goals,” McIntosh said. “They’re ugly. We have blue collars on our jersey for a reason.”

Monarch (3-1) tied the score with 5:25 to play on a gift goal when Rampart goalie Brock Vosburgh tried to hit a breakout pass up the middle. Instead, Vosburgh put the puck on Coyotes forward Dante Ruscitti’s stick and Ruscitti scored into an empty net.

Three minutes later, after the Rams had killed off the first penalty of a 5-on-3, Monarch took the lead for good on Geoffrey Howell’s wrister.

“We tried to play a little more disciplined,” Monarch coach Jimmy Dexter said. “I think we had a little more skill, but they were definitely outworking us.”

The Coyotes’ first two goals came on mistakes by Rampart. The first occurred when the Rams failed to clear the puck, and the second came with 58 seconds remaining in the first.

Twice the Rams cost themselves power-play chances when they committed penalties of their own on the delayed whistle.

“We got penalties, we lost our head,” said Rams captain Anthony Apodaca, who finished with an assist and 16 penalty minutes. “They got opportunities and they capitalized on their opportunities.”
