West Fillmore Street was shut for hours Thursday afternoon between Grand Vista Circle and Mesa Road due to a brush fire in a field across from Coronado High School.

The fire was reported extinguished about 3:45 p.m.

Fire crews battled the flames on multiple fronts. About half of the city’s resources responded to the blaze because of fears the flames would spread to nearby homes, apartments and schools.

Fire crews continued mopping up hot spots until at least darkness, and walked the area to get an accurate tally of the area burned, estimated earlier at between 10 and 20 acres, said fire Lt. Jeff Sieverts.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
