Coronado’s boys cross country team won the Colorado Springs Metro League Meet at Fountain-Fort Carson High School last week, finishing one point ahead of Palmer. Senior Dusty Solis took first with a time of 15:54.“It was pretty good but I think most of Coronado, our times were a little slower today because we did workouts through this week,” Solis said.With big runs at the regional and — most likely — the state meets coming up, Coronado coach Doug Hugill pushed his team in practice. Having good legs at the league meet is important, but being in top shape for state, that’s the ultimate goal.“I was really happy (with the league win), they were really tired this week — we worked really hard,” Hugill said. “We wanted to try and get through this week with really hard workouts, see how we did here knowing full well we might get beat.”Battle for state berths: The Class 5A regional meet will is slated for 3 p.m. today at Monument Valley Park. Air Academy, Coronado, Doherty, Douglas County, Durango, Fountain-Ft Carson, Liberty, Mountain Vista, Palmer, Pine Creek, Rampart and Sand Creek are expected to compete for the chance to run at state. The Class 3A regional meet will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at Fountain Creek Park in Fountain. Manitou Springs along with The Classical Academy, Colorado Springs Christian, Discovery Canyon, Dolores Huerta Prep, Ellicott, Florence, James Irwin Charter School, La Junta, Lamar, Peyton, Rye, St. Mary’s and Salida will run there. The top 40 percent of all full teams (a team consists of five runners who finish), plus the top 15 individuals will qualify to run at the state meet Oct. 31 at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins.Manitou Springs volleyball fell to visiting Colorado Springs Christian School 25-7, 25-9, 25-13 Tuesday, its last regular season game. The top eight teams in the Tri-Peaks League qualify for districts. The Mustangs play at Rye on Saturday to determine seeding in the district tournaments. The winner will be seeded fifth and the loser sixth.CSCS and St. Mary’s will play to determine the first and second seeds while The Classical Academy and Lamar will play to decide third and fourth seeds.District play is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 31.
