Florence QB proves to be too much for CSCS to handle

Florence went on the road Friday night and proved it is a dominant force in the Class 2A Tri-Peaks Conference by defeating Colorado Springs Christian School 38-10 at Mountain Lions Stadium.

The Pikes Peak 3A-A No. 2 Huskies (6-1, 5-0) scored 25 consecutive points by utilizing elusive and accurate quarterback Heath Benker.

“He’s a double threat — he can run, he can pass,” Lions coach Jay Kersey said. “And it doesn’t hurt that he’s a big, strong, physical kid.”

Benker completed 7-of-15 passes and had 15 rushes for 96 yards before being taken out of the game in the third quarter.

Tyler Faoro helped Florence’s cause by capping big drives. He had three touchdowns and finished with 57 yards on 15 carries.

“(Faoro) did a really good job,” Florence coach Mark Buderus said. “We’re real happy with the way he played.”

The Huskies defense held up its end as well, keeping No. 5 CSCS (4-2, 3-1) scoreless until the second half.

“We played really well defensively,” Buderus said.  “That’s what keeps us in the games — the field position.

“When we put our offense out there with almost everything on the right side of the 50, it makes it real tough on the other team.”

CSCS might have been defeated, but the Lions are not disheartened.

“That’s a good team — very well-coached and disciplined,” Kersey said.  “We’ve got work to do and we’ll back at it on Monday.  They’re a resilient group of kids”
