Sky Sox fans showed up to watch veteran major leaguers Jason Giambi and Russ Ortiz — plus the final Friday night fireworks show — but Salt Lake’s Mike MacDonald and Sean Rodriguez stole the spotlight in a 5-1 victory.

Giambi had two singles in four at-bats and Ortiz wasn’t bad, but MacDonald didn’t give up a run until the eighth and Rodriguez had three hits and three RBIs, including a home run.

Giambi singled on a soft liner to center in the first and smoked a liner to center in the sixth. He also grounded out and struck out in the eighth.

“I hit every ball on the barrel, which was nice,” Giambi said. “And I hit a homer foul. It’d been nice to keep that one fair.”

It was the second appearance and first start for Ortiz, 35, who signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Saturday. Ortiz is 113-88 in 12 big-league seasons.

MacDonald had a season-long outing and said, “That was certainly one of my better ones. I had everything working.”

Rodriguez had an RBI triple in the first and a two-run homer in the sixth, the final inning for Ortiz.

The Sky Sox have lost five of six on the homestand, but still appear a good bet to make the playoffs.

Notes

Outfielder Matt Murton cleared waivers and was optioned down from the Rockies to the Sky Sox after being designated for assignment earlier in the week. … Infielder Kenny Perez was put on the temporary inactive list.
