H.S. football A 6-man preview: Edison hopes to light up rivals

Southern Colorado 6-Man football is struggling after one school dropped its program.

But one area team looks headed in the other direction.

Edison, entering its third season, could be playoff bound.

The Eagles (3-5 in 2008) are hoping to be one of two teams representing the South Conference in the state playoffs. They look to be much improved, according to coach Jeff Jordahl.

“We’ll definitely have a shot if we stay healthy,” he said.

The Eagles return five starters on both sides of the ball, including their all-conference quarterback and a pair of all-conference honorable mentions.

Jordahl cites experience and speed as team strengths, but the Eagles will have to overcome a lack of size and an inexperienced secondary.

Edison, along with Colorado Springs-based Hilltop Baptist, competes in a conference with teams from southeastern Colorado.

The South Conference’s biggest school, 2007 state champion Eads with 63 students, looks like the preseason pick. It could add more players since neighboring perennial power Kit Carson folded. The defending conference champion Wildcats had just seven players on the first day of practice. In contrast Hilltop Baptist has 12 out, including all-conference tailback Jeremy Laxton.

“Our speed and experience are OK but we can’t afford any injuries,” coach Allen Knight said.
