Wolves are elusive in the wild, but the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center near Divide is home to not only wolves and wolf dogs, but also to foxes and coyotes.BackgroundSome of the animals were rescued from captive situations and others came to the center from zoos or other sanctuaries. The Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center survives solely on donations, and is the only sanctuary in Colorado certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The center exists not only as a sanctuary, but also as a place to learn about the majestic predators.Up close and personalThe basic Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center tour runs 60 to 70 minutes on average. A knowledgeable guide will take you on a hike to introduce you to the animals, and tell their stories.Tours are conducted year-round 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesdays though Sundays. They cost $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and younger. VIP Alpha tours, offering interaction with the ambassador wolves, and photography packages are also available.The experience is more than worth the cost, and the drive. It’s an educational experience, but one that is far more valuable for the memories.Wild sideEvery month, the center offers full moon tours. After feeding the wolves by flashlight, the group will take a trail up a hill to howl at the rising moon – to be joined by the wolves’ voices.
