3A TRACK: TCA senior girls record four-peat
LAKEWOOD •The Classical Academy extended its string of dominance on the track with a fourth consecutive girls title in the Class 3A state track meet Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium, topping Eaton 135-75. But the Titans didn’t stop there, as the boys’ team captured its first title, 72-54 over Buena Vista. The girls’ win was particularly meaningful for seniors Kelsey Brown and Kassie Mazzocco, who have been on four title-winning track teams and cross country teams while at the school.“Each group you do it with is different but it’s just as special,” Mazzocco said. “We run for each other and that never gets old.”“It’s just been such a blessing to be with this group,” Brown said.Of all the wins the last race in the last meet of their careers meant most to both girls. Mazzocco ran second and Brown anchored in the 1,600-meter relay, setting the state meet record in 3:58.07.“We talked this year about getting our record back, so it was great to go out there and be able to do it,” Brown said. Cross county coach and track assistant Alan Versaw called Brown and Mazzocco key pieces to the Titans’ success.“I haven’t had two kids who have led better,” Versaw said. “Everything you want kids to be, they just exemplify it. I couldn’t be happier for them to go out like this.”Next year Brown will run at Seattle Pacific University and Mazzocco at Colorado-Colorado Springs.Junior Kaitlin Hanenburg defended her title in the 1,600 Saturday, topping St. Mary’s rival Kara Slavoski for her third win of the meet. While the girls’ dominated from the outset, the boys’ fought off the competition to clinch the title. Junior Ben Hinckfoot scored critical points in winning the 300 hurdles, beating Strasburg’s Kameron Weber by .11 seconds.“Coach told me I’d have to really kick it at the end and that last 100 I just gave it all I had,” Hinckfoot said. The Titans won three individual and had six other top-five finishes.“It’s a complete team sport,” Hinckfoot said. “We really wanted to win it. Coach (Tim Daggett) told us we had a shot at it but we’d have to fight through ever race. We fought to the end.”
