2A TRACK: Area athletes reflect on their success
LAKEWOOD • It was a day of highs and lows at the Class 2A state track meets Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium.Fountain Valley senior Emy Hanna finished her career on a high note, equaling her personal best high jump of five feet, six inches to win her seventh state title.Miami-Yoder senior Mike Carl posted low times in the 100 and 200 dashes to push the Buffs to a second place finish behind Wray, 68-49.Hanna won the high jump in 2008 and 2006 as well. On Friday, she captured her fourth consecutive gold in the 100-meter hurdles. But all of the winning didn’t come easily for Hanna. “I think freshman year I was still oblivious,” Hanna said. “There was no pressure. It was like, so easy and it’s just gotten harder. This was probably the hardest competition I’ve had at state ever.”Hanna was emotional after the hurdles Friday, but the two-hour-long high jump competition allowed her time to reflect on her high school career. “The hard work paid off. I’m ready for college,” said Hanna, who is bound for the track at Texas Christian.Carl won the 100 dash in a time of 11.08 seconds to beat out Briggsdale senior Bruce Baxter, who ran finished in 11.13 seconds. Carl, who won the 200 Friday, anchored the second-place 800 relay team Saturday. Junior Chris Winstead (high jump) and senior Dwight Kadiurous (100 hurdles) placed fourth in their events before joining Carl and Jeremy Dole in the 800 relay.“It means a lot to us,” Carl said of the teams’ success. “I’m pretty proud of our guys and our organization.” Cripple Creek-Victor junior Shawn Dubbs bided his time against familiar foes before breaking away with 600 meters to go to win the 1,600 in four minutes, 24.8 seconds.“I knew if I sprinted past them that they weren’t going to stick with me and then I was just holding on until the end,” Dubbs said.
