HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER: Rangers must beat Mesa Ridge Friday to win title
MONUMENT – Cheyenne Mountain girls’ soccer coach Scott Johnson expected a defensive struggle, but it took some offensive persistence for the Indians to battle host Lewis-Palmer to a 1-1 double overtime deadlock in their duel for the 4A Colorado Springs Metro League regular-season championship Thursday night in Monument.
The Indians (13-1-1, 7-0-1 Metro) trailed 1-0 for more than 58 minutes of play before senior Elise Kensinger came out of a scramble in front of the L-P net to score the tying goal with 54.9 seconds left in regulation.
“I think we felt a sense of urgency,” Johnson said. “I was so proud of the way we responded.”
“It was just a scrappy game,”
Rangers coach Ian Wale said. “I thought Cheyenne Mountain played very well, but I give my girls a lot of credit.”
Lewis-Palmer (11-1-1, 6-0-1) notched its goal with 19:40 to play in the first half when Kourtney Guetlein put the ball into the left corner of the net. Senior Brooks Bingman headed the ball to Guetlein off a corner kick from junior Sammie Lewis to set up the goal.
Neither team was able to mount a serious threat in the two five-minute overtimes, so the championship will come down to today’s contest between the Rangers and Mesa Ridge.
With a win, Lewis-Palmer will take the Metro title on tie-breakers, according to Johnson.
A Rangers loss hands the title to Cheyenne Mountain.
