H.S. sports: This week’s highlights
This week’s high school sports highlights:
GIRLS’ GOLFCheyenne Mountain will be looking for its third consecutive team championship when the Spartan Invitational kicks off at 9 a.m. today at Valley Hi Golf Course. Marauder Invitational medalist Justine Kemp and Becky Nelson lead the Indians, and No. 3 Erin Terrio and No. 4 Sydney Pearson are a “pleasant surprise” for coach Bill Paulson. He likes his team’s chances again, but knows it’s not a lock.
“It’s still early (in the season) and it’s still golf,” he said. “Anything can happen on any given day.”
An improved Coronado team has placed second to the Indians twice, and coach Jill Kirkham knows what it will take for a win.
“It’s going to take our best,” she said.
Standout Sam Stancato paces the Cougars, who will have Alexis Rodarmel, Anna Gregorich and Kayleigh Lacey filling the No. 2-4 spots.
In the medalist race, Stancato, Kemp and Nelson must contend with defending Colorado Springs Metro League champion Jamie Zook of Palmer, her sister Forre and Trojan Invitational medalist Paige Crawford from Doherty.
BOYS’ LACROSSELewis-Palmer (5-4, 2-0 Pikes Peak League) hosts Cheyenne Mountain (5-3, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and coach Shawn Denmeade said the Rangers’ 8-6 win over Smoky Hill last week was “a big confidence booster.”
Seniors Brian Cole (30 goals, 21 assists), Kyle Lindsay (20 goals) and Devin Blanch (13 assists) pace Lewis-Palmer. Cheyenne Mountain is led by seniors Jesse Cotton and Krey Keller and junior Conner Baldridge.
