VIDEO: O say can you sing? Performers dazzle at Sky Sox tryouts
The vibrato that soared from 12-year-old Kiernan Kerr’s mouth echoed throughout Security Service Field on Sunday afternoon, dwarfing the gymnast-slash-singer’s tiny frame.Kiernan was one of about 15 contestants at this year’s vocalist auditions to sing the national anthem at upcoming Sky Sox baseball games.Though she first sang the patriotic ballad in second grade, she was nervous. It didn’t show.”I want to maybe get a career at singing,” she said.Siblings Justin, 25, and Tiffany Rodwell, 22, are also looking for a break into music. Both sing the anthem at Air Force Academy basketball and hockey games and gymnastic meets. They also write Christian music together on the side of their teaching jobs.”We just have our own team within each other,” Tiffany Rodwell said.They do not, however, perform the national anthem as a duet. They tried that once and it didn’t go well, Tiffany said.Others, like sisters Rachael, 16, and Renee Perry, 12, were just there for the experience.”I don’t know if I want to make a career out of it,” Renee Perry said. “I’m too young to know what I want to do with my life.”Rachael Perry sang first, her buttery high soprano wowing the small crowd of her competitors. The sisters then sang a duet, which garnered equal applause and head nods of approval.”People always tell us, never give up the opportunity because you never know who will be listening,” Rachael Perry said.Seated in a sky box, the judges, who were all members of the Sky Sox’s marketing team, rated the singers on a scale of one to five. The highest scorers will be asked to perform the anthem at a game this season, which starts April 9 and goes through Sept. 3.”The quality of singing that we had here today was pretty darn good,” said Jon Eddy, Sky Sox’s on-field MC. “The great thing about it is you can have so many different kind of people representing all of us.”
