TRACK: Widefield girls, FFC boys win Lancer Invitational
Freshmen sprinters GinAsia Hamilton and Chelsie Horton led the Widefield girls to the team title at the Lancer Invitational over The Classical Academy, 94-87.5. The Fountain-Fort Carson boys, new to the 5A classification, showed it had the depth to compete with bigger schools in its first meet, topping Doherty 125-86. Unfazed by a field full of upperclassmen, Hamilton swept the 100-, 200- and 400-yard dashes.Horton placed third in the 100 and second in the 200 and 400.”That was the plan,” Hamilton said of her sweep. “I didn’t know if I could do it but it feels good. Just letting everyone know I’m here.”With depth in the sprints, the Gladiators also won the 400 relay and finished second in the 800 relay.The Classical Academy junior Kaitlin Hanenburg won the 800 and ran the third leg of the winning 1,600 relay.Rampart junior Sara Benson won the 100 and 300 hurdles.Falcon sophomore Kiah Hicks won the discus and shot put.In the boys competition, Fountain-Fort Carson got points from 11 athletes, led by seniors Frank Socha and Brock Emery and junior Jamarius Mathis. The Trojans also won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. “We’ve had to convince the kids that we can run with 5A,” Trojans coach Ben Montoya said. “I said ‘I think you guys can rise to the challenge’ and they have.” Mathis recorded personal bests in the shot put (53 feet, 6.25 inches) and discus (149 feet, six inches). Emory won the 110 hurdles, was second in the high jump and third in the 300 hurdles, which he ran for the first time. Socha took second in the 1,600 and 3,200. “I’m looking forward to this season” Emory said. “I knew we (had the depth), we’ve always had some good (athletes) here at Fountain” Widefield senior Derek McAllister won the 200 and 400 and finished second in the 100 behind Doherty junior Kenny Chambers, who surprised many by breaking 11 seconds – 10.76 – in the first meet of the season.
