Former Fort Carson soldier Louis Bressler is expected to be sentenced today to 5o to 60 years for three crimes, including murder.Bressler, 25, will be sentenced in the August 2007 death of Pfc. Robert James, 24, an Iraq war veteran whose bullet-riddled body was found in a bank parking lot on Lake Avenue.Bressler also was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in the December 2007 shooting death of Spc. Kevin Shields. He also faces sentencing today for the October 2007 stabbing of a 19-year-old Colorado Springs woman.Colorado Springs detective Derek Graham testified, based largely on what Bastien told him, that a fellow soldier and James went out drinking Aug. 3, 2007. James got drunk, and his friend drove him near Fort Carson’s Gate 3 and dropped him off.Bressler and Bruce Bastien Jr., who were also drinking and driving around in Bastien’s Audi, picked up James. The pair, who didn’t know James, decided to rob him. They pulled into the parking lot of the Bank of Broadmoor off Lake Avenue. James pleaded for his life and was shot four times in the head and neck.The men spent the stolen money – between $20 and $45 – on marijuana, Bastien told Graham.The case went unsolved until Dec. 1, 2007, when the body of Shields, an Iraq war veteran and Fort Carson soldier, was found on a sidewalk in the 200 block of South 16th Street near Old Colorado City.Shields, investigators later determined, was shot with the same .38-caliber revolver that killed James. It was purchased by Bressler’s wife and later recovered by Colorado Springs police.Bastien got a deal from prosecutors in July and was sentenced in September to 60 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to accessory to murder in Shields’ homicide and conspiracy to murder in James’ homicide. He was supposed to testify against Bressler but broke the deal midtrial and refused to testify.Bressler was convicted in the Shields case and was working out a deal with prosecutors in the James case.-Call Zubeck at 636-0238
